How do I type Spanish language characters on a Windows computer?
To type Spanish language characters on a Windows 10 laptop, you'll first need to install the "United States International" keyboard and set that as the active keyboard for your computer. Please follow the instructions below, which are accompanied by an animated screenshot that demonstrates the whole process.
- Click on the "Search" bar in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
- Type "Edit language".
- Click on the "Edit language and keyboard options" item that displays as the top search result.
- Under "Preferred languages", click on "English (United States)".
- Click on the "Options" button that appears.
- Click "Add a keyboard" under the "Keyboards" section.
- Select "United States International" from the list of language packs. Once added, you'll see that keyboard now listed as an available keyboard.
- Now look over at the bottom-right corner of the screen. To the left of the date and time, you'll now see keyboard information. Click on "ENG US" to bring up the list of available keyboards.
- Click "ENG INTL" to switch to the international keyboard.
Now that you've installed this keyboard and set it as the active keyboard, you can use the following keystrokes:
- For an accented vowel (á, é, í, ó, ú), press the Alt key on the right side of the space bar and the letter at the same time. For example,
- Right Alt + a = á
- Right Alt + Shift + a = Á
- For a character with a tilde (ñ, Ñ), press the right Alt and the letter at the same time:
- Right Alt + n = ñ
- Right Alt + Shift + n = Ñ
- For punctuation:
- Right Alt + 1 = ¡ (no need to press the Shift key)
- Right Alt + / = ¿ (no need to press the Shift key)
NOTE - with the "United States - International" key active, if you are need to type an apostrophe, tilde, or quotation mark on its own, you'll need to enter a space after pressing the key to see the character.
